So many films, so many after-parties, so little time!

The last week went by in a New York minute: ran between the NY Human Rights Film Festival, the Brooklyn International Film Festival and the NY Women in Film and Television Feature Film Financing conference. Good to know I must have looked like a New Yorker too, as everyone kept asking me for directions & commenting on how much they liked my clothes and loved my shoes. A drumming troupe on the subway who made my heels move even offered me a job as a samba dancer too. Enjoyed the NY sub...

Games for Change Advocates Serious Fun

Think games are just kid's stuff? One glimpse at the braintrust headlining the Games for Change Festival, May 24 to 27, 2010, should reboot your mind.  Not since Claudius Ceasar jumped into the gladiator ring have leaders and games so converged.  Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra and Army Brig. Gen. Loree K. Sutton, Director of the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury, are but t...

Wallabout

New York is abuzz with news about the arrival of a more famous festival, Tribeca, but this past Sunday night, the film-goers of Park Slope were instead asking, "What about Wallabout?" This festival now in its second year is sponsored by the Pratt Institute, and on Sunday night in a very "Brooklyn" bar complete with two bars--one loungey one downstairs and another with folding chairs set up in rows--16 student films selected from over 75 submissions captivated the audie...

Havana Film Festival New York Ready to Rumble

Jointly presented with Havana, Cuba's International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, the Havana Film Festival New York is close, but no cigar. Subways and skyscrapers just can't match that fallen Habanero elegance as a habitat for Latino cinema. But if Cuba isn't on your itinerary and Manhattan is, you could do worse than to savor a week of Big Apple screenings from and about Latin America and the Caribbean, and about Latinos in the U.S. Opening Night w...

Politics (Overt And Subtle) At New Directors New Films

WOMEN WITHOUT MEN (Shirin Neshat)  For most people, a trip to the cinema is a welcome escapism from the harshness of the world and its problems. For others, films with political subjects or contexts are sought out for a population hungry to engage and feeling starved for perspective and analysis. While New Directors New Films is not an overtly political affair, it is hard to avoid the powerful political discourses that careen through some of the films in this year’s pro...

Documentary Deluge At New Directors New Films

For the first time in memory (if my faulting memory serves me well and it increasingly does NOT), the New Directors New Films showcase opened last evening with a documenary feature. This annual rite of the Spring film season, co-presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Film Department of the Museum of Modern Art, was ushered in by BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK, a fascinating look at the New York Times photographer and his love/hate obsession with the city he calls both his mu...

BUSKING THE SYSTEM

Director: Justin Morales.
We pass by them everyday on the subway. Sometimes we drop a dollar. Sometimes we stop and listen. But who are these anonymous musicians that play their hearts out day in and day out for little recognition? BUSKING THE SYSTEM is a documentary that explores the world of subway musicians living and performing in New York City. For in-depth perspective, BUSKING THE SYSTEM focuses in on the very different lives of several subway musicians in New York City. BTS follows three fresh faced musicians from Kansas City, MO, Seattle, WA and Cleveland, OH on their journey to see if they can make it in the New York subway and launch their career – will they discover success or be obscured in failure? Another musician already in New York is seen actually making a name for him self as a subway performer. There is also the familiar darker story of a man who plays strictly as a means for survival. From inspiring idealism to heartbreaking reality, BUSKING THE SYSTEM finally puts a spotlight on the musicians that make up the sounds of the underground.

Cairo movie buffs distracted by the beautiful game

CAIRO ¬ The joke going around Cairo today is that the Algerian Tribute in the city's international film festival will be withdrawn if the Algerian football team beats Egypt in this Saturday's crunch game. It is only a joke, but the fact is that even the most ardent of Egypt's film buffs are focused on the crucial world cup qualifier that will see one or the other country through to the World Cup finals in South Africa next year. Punters have commented that the orga...
