Carte blanche in Locarno to Nanni Moretti, the Italian director, actor and producerNanni Moretti, the Italian director, actor and producer was given a carte blanche to pick a set of films which will be screened during the 61st Locarno International Film Festival as a complete retrospective dedicated to him. 19 full-length features are included in the selection, split into two parts with titles chosen by Moretti the exhibitor in one, and films dear to Moretti as spectator in the other. The first raft of titles includes movies which Moretti first enjoyed and later backed up by programming them at the Nuovo Sacher in Rome. The first of these is Ken Loach’s Riff Raff, which was the very first feature to screen at the theater in November 1991. The second part of the program will offer the Festival audience a chance to see films which shaped the cinematic gaze of the young Nanni Moretti in the 1960s. Carte blanche Nanni Moretti – exhibitor:Riff Raff by Ken Loach, 1991 Carte blanche Nanni Moretti – ’60s moviegoer:Lola by Jacques Demy, 1961 This personal selection will complement the retrospective programmes already scheduled. Nanni Moretti himself will be accompanying his own and his chosen movies to Locarno, joining in discussions with the audience – one of the highpoints is bound to be the presentation on 13th August in the Piazza Grande of Palombella Rossa (Red Wood Pigeon, 1989). The retrospective will also be enhanced by the publication of a special book published in conjunction with Les Cahiers du cinema and an exhibition of photographs taken on set. The Nanni Moretti retrospective has been made possible by the generous support of Swiss Life. The Festival also wishes to thank Cinecittà Holding and the Italian national film school and archive, Centro sperimentale di cinematografia – Cineteca Nazionale. 10.08.2008 | Locarno Dailies's blog Cat. : Abbas Kiarostami Bucharest Carmelo Bene Cinema of Italy Edgar Reitz Entertainment Entertainment Francis Ford Coppola Honors Italian films Jacques Demy Karel Reisz Ken Loach Leon Gast Louis Malle Matteo Garrone Milos Forman Nanni Moretti Nanni Moretti Nanni Moretti Opening Day of Close-Up Riff Raff Robert Guédiguian Rome Sergej Bodrov the 61st Locarno International Film Festival
