Twin Falls Idaho

Twin Falls Idaho

Synopsis

The minute he wakes up and the minute before sleep - for two minutes each day, Blake Falls (Mark) feels alone. He tries to grab those minutes before they vanish. They are enough to remind him who he is. Francis Falls (Michael Polish) understands that if it weren't for Blake, he wouldn't be able to make it. His conjoined twin's heart is very strong. Blake, he knows, could live without him.

Venturing into the city in search of their mother who abandoned them at birth, the twins meet Penny (Michele Hicks), a young aspiring model with a whim for fashion and beauty. After an initial aversion, Penny starts to care for the conjoined brothers when she learns Francis is ill. The young woman slowly starts to see the true beauty beneath their unusual exterior, and surprisingly finds herself falling in love with Blake.

Twin Fall Idaho shares similar sympathetic qualities moviegoers felt with such award winning classics as The Elephant Man and Mask, and leads to a deeper understanding and insight into a rare abnormality while engaging in a moving love story. It marks the directorial debut of Michael Polish and was written by his identical twin brother Mark Polish.

Mark and Michael Polish became fascinated by conjoined twins when they stumbled onto a copy of the Guinness Book of World Records in grade school. There they found a photo of the famous Siamese twins Chang and Eng Bunker, who earned their living as 19th century circus attractions.

Identical twins themselves, the 27-year olds know something about sibling intimacy. Mark: "When we were kids, we didn't need to complete our sentences in order to communicate. We rounded off our words so much that we had to be enrolled in speech therapy before we could go to school. On some level, Twin Falls Idaho could be seen as a statement of what Mike and I feel about each other. All identical twins run the risk of fusion. It could've easily happened to us."

Every day of the 17-day shoot, the brothers were strapped into a custom-designed double corset with metal stays that positioned their bodies at almost a 45-degree angle. The Apparatus gave them the appearance of being fused in a fairly extreme way: The fictitious Falls twins share three legs, with the fourth virtually vestigal.

To compensate for their limited mobility, prior to the shoot they and director of photography David Mullen made intricate storyboards of every scene.

Female lead Michele Hicks: "They wrote the film and were now directing it, starring in it and, on top of all that, working in a lot of physical discomfort. When you see someone going that far with a project, it makes you try to go farther yourself."
