Closing Day

The Deauville festival comes to a close today with the award ceremony and two final Avant-Premiere screenings: Pushing Tin and the closing film A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Avant-premieres

Pushing Tin
Pushing Tin stars John Cusack (Con Air, Grosse Pointe Blank) as the cocky air traffic controller Nick Falzone, and Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade, A Simple Plan) as his stoic rival, Russell Bell. This irreverent look at the prevention of mid-air and mid-life collisions also stars Cate Blanchett as Nick's wife Connie, and Angelina Jolie as Russell's wife Mary.

Michael Hoffman, Director
"At the beginning I just had an image of this fat little Puck riding through the Tuscan countryside on the back of a turtle. The rest of the film sort of spun out from that."

A Midsummr Night's Dream
Shakespeare had originally set his story in an English version of ancient Greece where Elizabethan spectators would have felt right at home. Looking for a setting closer in time for a contemporary audience, while keeping the highly formal aristocratic culture in which it takes place, Hoffman decided to transport the story to Tuscany, a part of Italy he knows well, at the turn of the century.
