Spring 2007 Moving Pictures Magazine Short Film Contest

Mission Statement
Moving Pictures Magazine (MPM) is committed to bringing the best film news and commentary to its readers. By hosting our Short Film Contests, we hope to forge relationships with talented young filmmakers, providing them with contacts and a platform to show their work.
• We seek quality short films 15 minutes or less
• Three Categories - Animation, Documentary and Narrative
• DVD or VHS viewing samples accepted

Moving Pictures Magazine has been bringing “The Stories Behind the Movies” for almost two decades, with a particular focus on the art and societal impact of film. Moving Pictures is the pre-eminent film festival magazine and partner, working with more than 20 film festivals and markets each year. Our short film contests continue our commitment to fostering the art of dynamic filmmaking, by providing our short film contest winners with unparalleled access to the world’s best festivals, award-winning judges, Moving Pictures VIP festival events, distribution opportunities and exposure. Moving Pictures uses its considerable connections and media outlets to help talented filmmakers get their film and message to a wide and influential audience.

About the Contest:
Moving Pictures is looking for quality films that fall within one of the following genres:

Narrative
Documentary
Animation
(Please note that “mockumentaries” will be considered within the Narrative category.)

The film should also be:
15 minutes or less in length
In English or have English subtitles if shot in another language
Provided Digitally
Accompanied by a short letter or essay explaining the social context and purpose of the film. (This is used to assess the social message of the film, not to critique the filmmaker’s ability to write.)

Winners of the Spring 2007 Moving Pictures Magazine Short Film Contest are provided:
the opportunity to be flown and housed in the South of France.
special recognition within the Moving Pictures program at the Cannes Short Film Corner. The three winners will comprise the Moving Pictures Program at the Short Film Corner in Cannes.
special screening in the Palais.
an exclusive cocktail party honoring the winners and showcasing their films.

The winning films will be promoted:

on the Main screen page of the Short Film Corner,
within the Moving Pictures Magazine Cannes Special Issue,
listing within the first pages of the Short Film Corner catalogue,
following the festival in Moving Pictures Magazine.

Selected finalists, Audience Choice and Winners will receive a one-of-a-kind opportunity to have their short film seen by the very top talent in the film industry.
Moving Pictures Magazine will run a feature on Cannes, the Short Film Corner and our short film contest in the August/September 2007 issue.
There will be a special DVD included with this issue of Moving Pictures Magazine that will contain the winning films and selected finalists. DVD recipients will include members of such prestigious organizations as The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, The Writer’s Guild, the Director’s Guild of America and the Screen Actor’s Guild. The magazine is also distributed in all major bookstores (including Barnes & Noble and Borders) and newsstands within the U.S., and can be found abroad as well.
The Audience Choice Award - All films that pass the first round of judging will be uploaded to movingpicturesmagazine.com and will be available to participate in the Audience Choice Award. The Audience Choice winner will be the film that receives the highest ratings by the most people. The Audience Choice winner will receive recognition within Moving Pictures Magazine and movingpicturesmgazine.com and will be included in the special DVD distribution.

In an industry where connections are everything, this is an exciting opportunity for filmmakers to receive exposure at the world’s biggest film festival and market and to be able to meet and network with industry insiders.

Earlier this year, winners of the Fall 2006 Moving Pictures Magazine Short Film Contest were flown and housed in Park City, Utah, during Sundance and Slamdance Film Festivals courtesy of Moving Pictures Magazine. The winners were given access to the Moving Pictures Lounge during the festival and honored at the Moving Pictures VIP party on opening weekend. Their films were judged by an esteemed panel of judges that has 17 Academy Award Nominations among them, and many other notable honors and awards. The judges have also been available to answer questions and provide guidance to the winners. To view the winning films and read more about the Fall 2006 Moving Pictures Magazine Short Film Contest, click on the Shorts tab.
