The Fast Track for Film Students
Presentation and rules of the competition, reserved to films schools

"To celebrate the 20th Irish and British Film Festival that will take place in Cherbourg from 5th to 12th April 2005, we are organising an international competition for short films from film universities that will begin before the actual festival.
Following three screenings over a period of three months from January to March a jury of 6 will decide upon a short list of 15 shorts. A final selection will designate two candidates from these nominees: the prize-winner in the « fiction » category and a second one in the « animation » category. They will be screened at the closure of the 20th Irish and British Film Festival in Cherbourg. Their film will then be streamed on the filmfestivals.com, the festival website and Eicar and Cinergie websites

About The Cherbourg Festival of Irish and British Film.

Founded in 1985, Association Travelling organises each year a film festival to promote British cinema. Since 1997 Travelling has enlarged it’s cinematographic panorama by introducing the Irish cinema to it’s festival which is now entitled « Festival of Irish and British Film ».
The festival lasts eight days and consists of recent productions, premières and a competition. The history of Irish and British cinema is largely evoked during it’s tributes and retrospectives.
Since 1993 the festival organises a competition of fiction feature films by directors that yet have to be distributed in France, giving a Jury and Audience Prize. The competition is open to Irish and British films from first or second-time directors with the aim of encouraging young film makers in the industry.
With the same aim in mind, a competition of short films has been organised since 2002. This competition, which was originally reserved for British cinema schools, has now extended submission to other nationalities, notably French schools.
The festival celebrates its 20th edition in April 2005. For this occasion the association hopes to expand its horizons and give a new vigour to the festival while keeping, on the one hand, the main themes of its programme and on the other, the convivial atmosphere that is much appreciated by all those who attend.

The enthusiastic welcome given not only to film makers keen to shoot in the area but also to cinema schools and associated media events shows the potential for audiovisual creation in the region. As a reflection of this interest, the 2005 edition hopes to renew the festival’s image by integrating new themes, new sections and finding a new direction without losing the authenticity which gives the festival its originality.

Travelling hopes that by bringing new partners on-board, enlarging it programmes and working alongside regional representatives, it will be possible to organise an artistic event known not only for its inventiveness and richness but also as a national platform for the 7th art that will become a reference in the Cotentin region known for its undeniable tourist attraction.
As part of its wishes to open up the 20th edition and in the hope of positioning the Cherbourg-Octeville festival as a dynamic and creative event, Association Travelling is preparing the 20th anniversary in partnership with EICAR and CINERGIE who will notably be involved in the organisation of the short films competition.
