This December,
a new international film festival will be hosted in Dubai, United
Arab Emirates by Dubai Media City, the media free zone created by
the Government of Dubai in 2001.
The Dubai International
Film Festival (DIFF) will be held from December 6-11, 2004 under
the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid
Al Maktoum, Dubai’s Crown Prince, and under the chairmanship
of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of
the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman of the Emirates
Group.
In 2002, His
Highness Sheikh Ahmed, the Festival Chairman, developed the notion
that Dubai should create a new international film festival that
would act as a “Cultural Bridge” and that would, in
troubled times, serve as an instrument of global understanding and
inter-cultural dialogue between the Arab and non-Arab worlds. Hence,
the Dubai International Film Festival was born with a strong sense
of purpose and a mandate to build a new international cultural bridge.
The festival
further seeks to celebrate true excellence in Arab cinema while
screening films which reflect Dubai’s cosmopolitan and multi-cultural
character. The festival will run for five full days, consisting
of ten programs, featuring a total of approximately 80 films. The
event will open on December 6th with the first of five red carpet
“Dubai Gala Screenings” presented at Dubai’s stunning
new Madinat Jumeirah Arabian Resort.
The Dubai International
Film Festival program will consist of ten sections, featuring a
total of approximately 80 films. The program will feature a gala
screening on each of the festival days, held at the new Madinat
Jumeirah Arabian Resort. The other screenings will take place at
Jumeirah Beach Hotel, the amphitheatre at Dubai Media City and at
Century Cinemas at the Mercato Mall.
The film festival will feature contemporary and classic films in
ten main sections, showcasing both global and regional cinema.
