CELEBRATE THE 11TH YEAR OF DOCUMENTARY EXCELLENCE AT THE HOT DOCS
FESTIVAL
RUNNING APRIL 23 - MAY 2, 2004
Hot Docs, North
America's largest documentary film festival and market, celebrates
its 11th year of presenting innovative and provocative documentaries
from Canada and around the world. Voted Toronto's Best Big Film
Festival in 2003 by Toronto's Now Magazine, Hot Docs has built a
solid reputation for screening the best of documentary cinema to
the general public and film industry.
Located in the most exciting and diverse city in Canada, this springtime
festival has grown to become a must-attend event for local and international
filmmakers, buyers, distributors and broadcasters.
Hot Docs was
founded in 1993 by the Canadian Independent Film Caucus, a national
association of documentary filmmakers, now called DOC. In 1996,
Hot Docs became a separately incorporated organization with a mandate
to screen and support the work of Canadian and international documentary
filmmakers.
With an expanded slate of industry programmes, including the 5th
annual Toronto Documentary Forum (TDF), Hot Docs provides a stimulating
market environment where documentary filmmakers and other industry
professionals examine issues, meet colleagues, conduct business,
and locate interest and financing for their documentaries.
In 2004, Hot Docs will screen 107 documentaries, over
half of which are North American or World premieres, from the following
programmes:
• Canadian
Spectrum: 34 of this year’s hottest homegrown documentaries.
• International Showcase: Over 60 films by international documentary
filmmakers from 25 countries.
• Outstanding Achievement Retrospective: A tribute to Michael
Maclear, a celebrated international filmmaker and broadcast journalist.
• Made in . . . South Africa: Six selected films to celebrate
the tenth anniversary of democracy in South Africa.
• Spotlight on the Netherlands: Featuring nine specially selected
Dutch productions.
• RealKids, RealTeens: A Hot Docs series of eight films, highlighting
the experiences of kids and teens around the globe.
• Focus On: Four docs highlight the talents of Canadian filmmaker
Nettie Wild.
The Hot Docs Box Office opens for advance ticket sales on March
30, 2004 at Sonic Boom Records (512 Bloor St. West) or online at
www.hotdocs.ca.
All daytime screenings will be free for students and seniors, with

Hot Docs will also mount a full roster of professional development
and market events for documentary practitioners, including the renowned
Toronto Documentary Forum, running April 28-29.
Hot Docs is proud to include CTV, Telefilm Canada, Rogers, History
