According
to neighbours and relatives, Bubi was a great
guy. Tall, sporty and very correct, he was considered
an upstanding son and father.
Yet
Bubi, born Ludolf Hermann von Alvensleben, was
a prominent Nazi officer. He served in Poland,
where he was responsible for many deaths. After
the war he managed to escape to Argentina and
lived under the protection of the Peron government.
Polish-born
documentary film-maker Stanislaw Mucha came upon
Bubi's story accidentally: through an ad he met
a relative who wanted to learn Polish "to clear
up some family matters". Upon discovering what
'the matters' were, Mucha became fascinated.
"What
was interesting was how much the family wanted
to keep this secret," said Mucha. "The more silent
they were, the more interested I became."
