Lecon des Tenebres

by Vincent Dieutre

Vincent Dieutre caused a stir with his first feature-length film, Rome Désolée (1995). Shot on 16mm, this was a lyrical, experimental work which contradicted all the usual tenets of narrative cinema.

Dieutre's new film, Leçons De Tenebres, is in a roughly similar vein. Rome, Antwerp and Naples are the cities visited. En route, the film-maker and traveller contemplates the works of Caravaggio, Honthorst, Cariaciola and Ribera. Inspired by these Old Masters, he reflects upon his own existence and has various physical encounters with male strangers whom he gets to pose for him. Fragmentary and poetic, Leçons De Tenebres is, at heart, the story of an artist in search of lost beauty.
