Though not yet 30, Katja von Garnier has directed two well-received features, Abgeschminkt and Bandits. In fact, the former received its world premiere in the 1993 Panorama.

"Festivals are important," she says. "They give a platform for distribution in other countries. My films found distribution mainly through festivals.

"A festival award helps tremendously, but it's not a necessity.A film can be successful without one."

What will she be seeking? "Films I can respond to on an instinctive and intuitive level. What is it saying? What is its theme? Is there a vision? Performances!"

Von Garnier sees herself as not only representing women on the jury, but also "giving the director's point of view - and also that of the young generation, because I'm the youngest."

Of her fellow jurors she says: "Everybody is very respectful to each other. We like each other, but our opinions are more different then I thought they would be. And everybody takes this responsibility very seriously."

Von Garnier briefly tried acting on stage, but has clearly found work behind the lens more fulfilling. Her advice for aspiring directors? "If I had to say one thing, it would be: 'Don't compromise on what you believe in.'" OL
