Britain's two most successful producers of recent years, Andrew Macdonald (Trainspotting, Shallow Grave) and Duncan Kenworthy (Four Weddings and a Funeral) have formed a joint venture, DNA Films. They are currently putting the finishing touches to their bid for National Lottery funds. DNA intends to executive-produce low-to-medium budget films - 'up to £5 million,' commented Macdonald - for the UK and European market. The name DNA, which stands for Duncan-and-Andrew, was coined by Kenworthy's friend, Anthony Minghella.
Macdonald was in Berlin to meet PolyGram Germany and to attend the festival screening of Twin Town. His US$12 million Figment Films production, A Life Less Ordinary, recently finished filming. Britain's Film Four, which fully financed Trainspotting, has a much smaller slice of the new picture. Macdonald still values the partnership. 'David Aukin [Film Four's head of film] is our creative sounding board,' he observed, 'even if Film Four only have the UK TV rights, it is useful for us to have someone aboard we can totally trust. The first money for A Life Less Ordinary was Film Four money.' However, Macdonald admitted that Figment's loyalty to Film Four costs in terms of lost revenue from British satellite TV. 'We've certainly missed out on a bit of the Sky money we would have received.' GM
