(Miss Nobody)
Marysia is 15 and painfully shy. When her middle-class Catholic family moves to the city, she has difficulty adjusting to her new environment and feels inexperienced, out of place. The ice is finally broken when she is befriended by Kasia, a very independent classmate.
Kasia moves in artistic circles and introduces Marysia to a whole new world. Alas, her musical gift is also her demon. Kasia tries to impress upon Marysia that complete isolation is the only way to tap into one's innermost creative source. The absoluteness of her 'music demon' makes it possible for her to stave off all others. When Kasia demands that Marysia renounce God for the sake of her inner purity, it dawns on the disturbed girl that Kasia has gone too far. Marysia withdraws from Kasia and attaches herself to rich and beautiful Ewa, Kasia's opposite; Ewa's life of consumption and material wealth, however, are equally strange and seductive to Marysia. Under Ewa's tutelage Marysia blossoms into a sophisticated young lady, leaving her with nothing but contempt for her middle-class parents. But Kasia and Ewa have more in common than it first appeared…Andrzej Wajda, the Meister of Polish cinema (Ashes and Diamonds, 1958, Danton, 1982), hasn't made a Zeitgeist film since Man of Iron (1981). A year ago, his Holy Week was presented at the Berlinale. His movie version of Tomek Tryzna's bestselling novel Miss Nobody hones right in on the subject matter of the book, the values of young people. Although today's Polish youth are growing up in a free country, they are constantly confronted with the crusty conventions of the past.
Parallel to the film's central plot, Wajda's film serves as a sort of stock-taking of the current social climate in his homeland. But the old master also wants his film to be interpreted in political terms: ýIn my opinion films about emotions are the most suitable way of counteracting the increasing violence and eroticism on the screen.'
