Berlin
is much more than the competition films and the many stars attending.
There's the Panorama section that presents new works by both
renowned directors and talented newcomers, discoveries for future
arthouse programmes. In its 30th year, the International Forum
of Young Cinema presented a national focus on new Vietnamese cinema.
The Kinderfilmfest has been under the auspices of UNICEF since
1982 and shows a selection of movies for young audiences. From a slightly
different angle, Shooting Stars 2001 presented 18 young actors
marking its 4th edition. And of course, Moritz' Favorites,
his pick of 23 films shown during his 20 years at the helm of the
Festival.

| Panorama
The
Panorama's original mission is to inspire and discover films for
the coming arthouse season in Europe. Films from 32 countries -
or rather "cultural regions" - have been selected for the program
from more than 1600 new works. As in previous years, the Panorama
consists of the main program (21 titles), the Panorama Special (22
titles) and Panorama Dokumente (11 titles).

Forum
This
year the national focus of the International Forum of Young
Cinema was on new Vietnamese cinema. As part of the Berlin
Film Festival, the forum presented eight films offering an impressive
inside view of Vietnamese history and present-day life. The Vietnam
War is the dominant theme, although film-makers have only recently
been able to show the devastating and fundamental impact the years
of war had on Vietnamese society.

Festival Director Moritz de Hadeln Reminiscences
|
| The
51st Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin was festival director Moritz
de Hadeln's farewell after a 22 year tenure. Over two decades,
more than 700 films have been invited by him to participate in the
International Competition. At this year's festival, de Hadeln decided
to look back on "his" Berlinale era from 1980 to the present day with
a selection of personal cinematic memories under the banner "Moritz'
Favourites". The difficult choice was facilitated somewhat by the
availability of prints for certain films. The resulting programme
comprised 23 films screened at the Cinemax 6 during the festival from
February 8 - 18. Among the 23 films were Cruising by W. Friedkin,
Pauline a la plage by Eric Rohmer, Brazil by T. Gilliam,
Smoke by Wayne Wang and Central
do Brasil by Walter Salles. Accompanying the programme is
the tribute publication "Closing the Book" by veteran film critic
Volker Baer and Moritz de Hadeln. Highly personal statements and passing
comments by the longtime director review two decades of festival history.
